Krabi Sea Kayak Championship 2015 begins in Krabi, Thailand

The 2015 Krabi-Enlive Sea Kayak Championship will be held from April 1-30, at Ao Nang Bay, Railay Bay, and the Thara Public Park in the Mueang district in Krabi Province. There are three categories that comprise the competition: Surf Ski, Single-Seat, and Two-Seat kayak competitions.

The Kayak Championship is being held in conjunction with the 4th Annual Sea Kayak Asian Cup, which will feature the Surf Ski men’s 22-kilometer and women’s 12-kilometer races. The starting point for those races is Ao Nang Bay, with the finish line at Lan Pudam. Winners will be awarded a royal trophy under the auspices of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The two contests originated to highlight the skills of kayak and water sports enthusiasts, with both men and women competing in the activities. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), along with Krabi Provincial Authorities, the Enlive Foundation, the Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand, and the Royal Navy have all joined together to organize the events.

Officials believe that choosing to promote water competitions in Krabi is a natural way to show people how environmentally friendly tourism can be. In recent years, rowing sports have gained a great deal of popularity in Krabi Province.

TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik hopes these events will raise awareness of ecotourism, and help cultivate a culture of sustainable tourism in Krabi Province. In comments made before last year’s championships, he said, “…These fun events are helping to reaffirm Krabi’s commitment to encouraging tourism which does not harm the natural wonders of the land and sea.”

In addition Mr. Thawatchai said, “This is why the concept of sustainability or ecotourism is a top priority, and any tourism activities which are clean, green, non-polluting and sustainable are always encouraged and promoted.”

Other eco-friendly activities tourists can enjoy during the championships (and all-year-round in Krabi) are scuba diving, rock climbing, fishing, cycling, and releasing sea turtles, crabs and other marine creatures back into the Andaman Sea.
